OpenAI introduced GPT-Live, a new generation of models powering ChatGPT Voice. GPT-Live is our smartest voice model yet, and is built on research advances that make conversations with AI feel much more natural.
Unlike past voice models, GPT-Live can listen and speak at the same time, enabling more natural back-and-forth, a better sense of timing, and live translation. This is powered by what’s known as a full-duplex architecture.
For questions that require web search, deeper reasoning, or more complex work, GPT-Live can delegate to our latest frontier model behind the scenes and bring the result back into the conversation when it’s ready.
Each week, more than 150 million people use Voice and Dictation in ChatGPT. We’re rolling this out to everyone globally starting today, and it will become the default model powering ChatGPT Voice. Here’s what to expect:
- More natural conversations. Better handling of interruptions, natural pauses, pacing, and moments where you want ChatGPT to simply listen without jumping in.
- Smarter answers. ChatGPT Voice can now delegate to our latest frontier models, and you can select intelligence from Instant, Medium, and High reasoning options.
- Better listening. Improved turn-taking, fewer interruptions during pauses, and better handling of background noise.
- Visual responses. Rich visual cards for topics like weather, sports, stocks, and more while you’re talking.
- Live translation. Continuous interaction also enables more natural real-time translation.
A good voice model should be enjoyable to talk to. These advances power a new ChatGPT Voice experience that is more intelligent and natural to use. Over time, we believe this research will unlock the ability to use voice for increasingly complex, longer-running, and more agentic work.
Availability specifics: GPT-Live will become the default voice model for Go, Plus, and Pro users, while a mini version of the model will become the default for Free users. This will be available across mobile and web. They’re coming soon to the API, and developers can sign up to be notified using this form.
