When it comes to healthcare, India has always had thousands upon thousands of students eyeing a medical degree. But the journey is rarely simple. Between the NEET paper and the visa stamp, there is an entire maze of decisions, and it is not always easy to navigate. For students pursuing higher education abroad, particularly postgraduate programmes, the process tends to be more straightforward. It is the students just entering the system who often find things far more complicated.
Ms. Sonal Kapoor, Global Chief Business Officer at Prodigy Finance, says the volume of interest in this space has never been higher. “We do have a lot of healthcare students pursuing higher education abroad, and the honest answer is that there is no shortcut when it comes to achieving a high end goal like becoming a healthcare practitioner. Students genuinely need to put in the effort.”
She adds that one question comes up more than almost any other. “We have been receiving a lot of queries asking whether NEET is required for healthcare courses abroad. The students we typically work with are at the higher education level, meaning they have already completed their graduation in India, and many of them have already cleared NEET at that stage. But when it comes to studying abroad more broadly, NEET is not always the deciding factor it is assumed to be. For students who plan to eventually work in India, however, it absolutely is.”
That distinction matters more than most students realise. Foreign universities themselves do not ask for a NEET scorecard as part of their admission process. A student can be accepted into a strong international programme without ever submitting a NEET result. But recognition to practice medicine back home in India is governed entirely separately, by the National Medical Commission. According to the NMC’s official regulations, Indian citizens intending to obtain a primary medical qualification from any institution outside India, on or after May 2018, must mandatorily qualify NEET-UG, and the NEET result itself is deemed to be the Eligibility Certificate for this purpose, valid for three years from the date the result is declared.
The real complexity comes after graduation. Returning students currently must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination to obtain a license to practice in India. According to the National Medical Commission’s National Exit Test Regulations, 2023, this exam is expected to eventually be replaced by the National Exit Test, a single unified licensing exam designed to apply equally to graduates from Indian and foreign medical institutions alike.
Sonal further added that while Prodigy Finance does not currently support undergraduate programmes, students still have real options available to them. “Platforms like NovaGrad exist precisely for this reason. NEET is not needed to get admission abroad. But if you ever plan to come back and practice in India, you will need it eventually. And here is the part that surprises most families. Your actual NEET score does not matter to the international university at all. Whether you scored high or just cleared the minimum, it makes no difference to your acceptance abroad.”
That last point is one worth repeating clearly, because it is so often misunderstood. A low NEET score does not close the door to a strong international medical education. It only affects whether that degree can later be used to practice in India. For families weighing this decision, the real question is not whether NEET can be avoided. It is where the student genuinely sees their medical career unfolding, in India or abroad, and builds the right plan around that answer from the very beginning.
