The Net Zero City Leaders Summit & Expo 2026 has officially opened in Taipei alongside the Smart City Summit & Expo 2026, gathering policymakers, industry leaders, technology innovators, and city officials from across the globe. The event serves as a key platform to accelerate the development of sustainable, low-carbon urban ecosystems, with a strong emphasis on the role of artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, and cross-border collaboration in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior representatives from Taiwan’s National Development Council and Ministry of Economic Affairs, along with delegates from international organizations, research institutions, and city governments. Participation from countries including the United States, Germany, Japan, Canada, Poland, Brazil, and Thailand underscored the global scale and importance of the expo.
In his keynote address, Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-hsin highlighted that achieving net-zero targets requires a holistic and multi-layered approach. He outlined Taiwan’s efforts to advance renewable energy sources such as solar, offshore wind, and geothermal power, while also exploring next-generation solutions like hydrogen energy and carbon capture technologies. He further emphasized the importance of improving energy efficiency across sectors to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Addressing the impact of rapid digital transformation, the Minister noted that while AI is driving efficiency and innovation, it also contributes to rising energy demand. He stressed the need to align technological advancements with sustainable practices by promoting green energy adoption and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Chairman Yeh Chun-Hsien of the National Development Council highlighted the concept of “AI-driven dual transformation,” noting that cities play a pivotal role in global climate action due to their significant contribution to carbon emissions. He emphasized that integrating AI into city management—ranging from disaster response to smart infrastructure and resource optimization—can help cities become more efficient and environmentally sustainable.
The expo features a wide range of innovations in net-zero technologies, including smart energy management systems, AI-enabled monitoring tools, energy-efficient data centers, and digital twin solutions. Breakthroughs in carbon capture, green building materials, and hydrogen energy are also being showcased as critical pathways toward sustainability.
A major focus of the event is fostering international collaboration. Representatives from global alliances such as the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy highlighted the need for joint efforts among governments, industries, and communities. With cities responsible for nearly 70% of global carbon emissions, coordinated global action is essential for meaningful progress.
